Planning can be confusing and difficult to ensure that everyone is on the same page and understands what everyone is trying to achieve. Terminology matters, as this might be where the confusion starts. So let’s try and clarify that there are 4, maybe even more, but let’s start somewhere, levels of Planning.
1. Strategic Planning — Setting the Destination
Strategic planning defines the organisation’s future direction. It establishes long‑term purpose, vision, strategic pillars, and the non‑negotiables that guide decisions. This plan provides guardrails and clarity on the future being built, without detailing actions.
2. Business Planning — Turning Vision Into a Roadmap
Business planning translates the long‑term strategy into a practical roadmap for the next 12–24 months. It prioritises initiatives, sets financial and operational targets, and allocates resources to ensure focus.
3. Operational Planning — Making the Work Happen
Operational planning focuses on day‑to‑day execution. It outlines workflows, responsibilities, process improvements, and the rhythms that ensure consistent delivery across the organisation.
4. Individual Planning — Giving Every Person Line of Sight
Individual planning aligns personal goals, KPIs, and development priorities to the broader organisational plans. It creates clarity, accountability, and ownership at the individual level.
